| Notes for Wesley Waggoner |
| Wesley Waggoner was one of many who had purchased land from Thomas F. Walker. In May 1886, Walker's heirs by representatvie T. E. Gregory sued Waggoner, Woods, and Thos Showalter in Chancery Court for the amounts due on the property. None had deeds to their property. The land was first ordered surveyed by Geo. W. Penley, then Waggoner, Woods, and Showalter were given 60 days to pay for lands or the lands would be sold on the courthouse steps. Martin Williams Commissioner sold to Waggoner his tract of land and took from him "two several bonds for the purchase money for $72.74 each, payable in one and two years with interest from 5 Sept 1887 till paid." In September of 1889. it was reported that Waggoner had paid required amounts and Martin Williams ordered to convey them deeds. After Waggoner paid $5. for the service. The case was continued. In 1896 The deed has still not been conveyed. F. Kegley was appointed special commissioner to issue deed. Then "F. Kegley is substituted as commissioner to make said deed. Instead Martin Williams the commissioner heretofore appointed to make said deed" Seven years later, in Bland County Deed Book 8 page 160, on the 10 of Sept 1903 Wesley Waggoner received his deed for 198 acres 14 years after he had satisfied the debt. Though further investigation is needed it appears these deeds may have been tied up in some instances due to the commissioners selling timber off the lands under the guise of paying back taxes.259,260 |
