Halloween

is celebrated on November 1st along with another well celebrated holiday known as Dia De Los Muertos or in English “The Day of the Dead”. Mexicans celebrate this day to imbrace death where as us Americans fear the sound and thought of death.

Trick or Treating is actually something started more recently to keep the children out of trouble. The parents would give the children candy so they wouldn’t go out and do pranks. So then, children began going from house to house too collect candy and later on started the whole dressing up thing. Also, another way trick or treating came about can be traced back to the early celebrations of All Soul’s Day in Britain. The poor would go out begging and the housewives would give them special treats called “soulcakes”, called “going a-souling”, the “soulers” would promise to say a prayer for the dead. Over time customs have changed, town children became beggers as they went from house to house they were given apples and even money. In the Pioneer Days, the housewives gave the children candy to also keep from being tricked, so they would shout “Trick or Treat!”

Halloween, also recognized as All Hollows Eve, is a holiday celebrated around the world. The phrase “All Hallows Eve” actually means the day before all saints, which is a Catholic holiday. In Celtic traditions Halloween is considered their start of the Celtic new year. This day is known to honor all Saints in Heaven and was very important to the church. Today ;however, it is more of a children holiday for those who enjoy dressing up in costumes. Consumers in America spend at least $2.5 billion during Halloween.

During the 1800s, in the Irish Potato Famine, 700,000 immigrants came to America bringing with them traditions and the Jack-O-Lanterns. The lantern was usually carved from turnips, potatoes, or beets lit by a burning piece of coal or just a candle. The lanterns represented souls of loved ones and were placed in windows and porches said to protect them from goblins.
