| Notes for James (Spouse 1) |
1900 Census lists married to Marenda Pigg 3 years. Per the Chancery records of Bland County VA there appear to be 2 separate J. Woods and it is unclear of their connection to one another. Chancery Order Book #3 Bland County VA T. E. Gregory vs Thos Showalter et als.253 First Case was a suit brought by heirs of Thomas F. Walker for payment of land sold to James Woods by Thomas F. Walker in his lifetime and was heard with Thos Showalter and Wesley Waggoner. First the lands were ordered surveyed by Geo. W. Penley. Then J. W. Woods ordered to pay the purchase price. Martin Williams took 2 several bonds for the money for $69.27 each payable in one and two years with interest 5 Sept 1887. The collected fees to be paid to T. E. Gregory adm. By Sept 1889 it was reported that J. W. Woods has paid required amounts and Martin Williams commissioner was ordered to convey said lands to Jas Woods. Bland County Deed book 6 page 120, 4 Feb 1891, Deed was conveyed to James Woods in chancery suit T.E. Gregory vs Thos Showalter et als by Martin Williams Comm. 115 Acres on Dry Fork.
The second case is more severe. T.E. Gregory vs J. W. Woods et als 254,255
Geo. W. Penley was ordered to survey said lands of J. W. Woods to determine the amount of land that was sold by Thomas F. Walker to said J. W. Woods in his lifetime. In 1887 an order was issued again that Geo. W. Penley report the number of acres sold to J. W. Woods By Thomas F. Walker. Report finally came about and the number of acres totaled 253. J. W. Woods has agreed in writing to pay Thomas F. Walker $3 an acre for the land on 24 Oct 1885. He had paid a total of $20. $739.00 was still due on this 253 acres. J. W. Woods was given 30 days to pay $739.00 otherwise land would be sold at the front door of the courthouse. Martin Williams, Commissioner sold to J. D. Honaker the J. W. Woods lands at the price of $426.00 It was ordered that this amount be taken off the $739.00 plus interest and adjusted the amount to be collected further from J. W. Woods. Court then ordered J. W. Woods property (house and lot near Churchwood in Pulaski VA) be ordered sold to pay the rest of the debt on the 253 acres. During the proceedings the court was reported the death of J. W. Woods in 1889. This is why there must have been two J. Woods as James Woods was still living in 1900. In Chancery order book 4 page 50, it is noted that C.P. Muncey and J. D. Honaker had paid the purchase price for the land of J. W. Woods known as the "Henry Grey lands" and Martin Williams ordered to convey the deeds. Henry Gray was the father of William Gray whom was the son in law of James Woods of the 1900 census.
Bland County Deed Book 9 page 290 16 April 1906, Bristol Adams and Joseph Tynes purchased the former Woods lands from C. P. Munsey and J. D. Honaker for $600. Deed does not list acreage. Bristol Adams was the son-in-law of A. J. Tynes. |
