| Notes for Samuel Walker Williams |
| History of Bland County states that Judge Samuel W. Williams was born on a plantation called Leatherwood in Pittsylvania co. His marriage records say he was born in Henry Co. Va but his siblings were born in Pittsylvania Co. Samuel W. Williams bought and sold many thousands of acres of land in Bland Co, as evidenced by the records in the Clerk's Office. At the time of his death he owned more than four thousand acres of land in Bland County. He also owned mineral and timber interests on and under perhaps that much more land. It is questionable that most of timber interests were on lands that went through Chancery Court of Bland County where his brother Martin Williams, served as Circuit court commissioner especially in the Dry Fork cases. An example would be the lands of Richard Shields. See Richard Shields entry. And also Bland County Deed Book 8 pg. 462 where Samuel Williams sold timber rights to Younker Merrimon Company on mostly Dry Fork lands in 1902. |
