Notes for Andrew Jackson Tynes
Mercer County Census 1870 A. J. Tynes and wife Julia are living in Princeton WV next door to Robert Harman85
In Chancery court May 1886 in Bland County T.E. Gregory vs A.J. Tynes et als came to court. A.J. Tynes and Richard Shields ordered to pay amounts due on property purchased from Thomas F. Walker in his lifetime. A.J. Tynes was ordered to pay the sum of $60. the amount of the two purchase money bonds sued on for $30 each with interst thereon from 11 day of August 1879, the date of said bonds, subject to a credit of $20 paid 3 March 1884 and $10 7 Oct 1884 within 30 days. Shields and Tynes both paid amounts due and had been issued deeds and it was stricken from the docket.86
Some family members believe A.J. Tynes was the first black man on Dry Fork. That the lands were sold to A.J. Tynes because he did not look like a black man but looked white. Richard Shields was the only black person living in Bland County of the original owners of Dry Fork in 1870. Since his ownership goes back to the same date as Tynes I don't think Walker didn't know of the race of Richard Shields since he had been living in Bland County for at least nine years prior to his purchase of the land.
In the case of T.E. Gregory vs Lewis Henderson et als. A.J. Tynes it seems loaned the Harman heirs money to keep lands. He had been repaid and the Harman heirs were ordered to be conveyed a deed.87
